Many people will have been sad to see The George pub close its doors in 2020. It was a great place to meet with friends, have a chat, a meal or a drink, all in pleasant and nostalgic surroundings. It is a sad loss to the village. Not only is it a sad loss to the village of Bethersden, but many people from the surrounding area are very fond of it.

We are determined to see if there is any way we can save it and bring it back to its former glory.
We contacted the owner to find out what his intentions are and he told us that he was putting it on the market and selling it. We therefore set out to see if we could raise the funds to purchase the freehold of the pub by offering local people the opportunity to invest by means of buying shares.
The George has always been a viable business, in a fantastic location right in the heart of the village of Bethersden (in Kent). Other villages have successfully purchased their local pub and turned them into very successful businesses with the help of investors and the community for all their benefits. Village pubs can then offer valuable services in addition to just being a pub.
Initially we circulated a leaflet in Bethersden and from the response received we now know that The George Pub would be a great investment opportunity, not just for the local community but for any investor. Under the Enterprise Investment Scheme there would be great tax relief benefits for all investors.
After distributing a Questionnaire in the area of Bethersden we found that many who have used The George over the years are very disappointed to see the pub close and offered their help in many ways to help us re-open it. The response has been overwhelming with many people offering to invest varying amounts to save it.
Our intention is to set up a Limited Company to purchase the freehold with shareholders purchasing shares in a Limited company under the EIS (Enterprise Investment Scheme). By setting up a Limited Company to purchase the pub and investors purchasing shares in the Company under the EIS, it would provide all investors with an immediate Tax Relief of 30% on their investment. After 3 years there would also be no Capital Gains Tax on any shareholder’s profits when selling shares. In addition the business would pay dividends from the profits on an annual basis to all shareholders, once the business is into profits.

Our target is to reach £600,000 to purchase the pub and this would include fees and taxes. Once we have reached the £600,000 target, arrangements will be made to purchase the Freehold of The George Pub and re-open it as soon as possible.
